The problem as well illustrated by David's point is the cumulative effect. Lots of road closures, generally piecemeal with zero thought or coordination or traffic modelling, at the same time as key junctions and stretches of the remaining 'main' roads are seeing large reductions in capacity due to cycle lanes and new light phases. The impact is evident all aroudn with a general icnrease in congestion but also the whole network is now more vulnerable. Minor issues can rapidly cause gridlock. W4 is particularly vulnerable as its a cut through for large amounts of through traffic. Nothing done to reduce the number of vehicles that can enter W4, but capacity along exit routes has fallen and number of open routes also cut. Even after the immediate impact of closures this weekend this is the new normal, with more congestion and hence pollution. Cycling wont solve it, now matter how many times certain posters reiterate it. |
