Andrew, I don’t know where you live, how far from the High Road , but it’s fine for you to decide your car use is necessary or otherwise, in my book. The distance is one consideration. Your strength, depending on what your buying, your general health are all part of the equation. The cycle lobby produce figures, statistics . I object to them altering or attempting to alter how people live their lives, based on a guesstimate. What gives them the right? As I always say, these same people will fly off on holidays, and think that’s ok. Their carbon footprint is their business. Some of the people driving may never go on a foreign holiday. How do you factor that in. Then there’s the climate conferences, where world leaders fly in from all over the place. I’ll be the judge of whether I should make a car journey and trust my judgement and my concern for the planet, not some bullying cycle zealot, like Boardman, for instance. Who is happy to say cyclists should not be forced to wear helmets for fear of messing their hair up, or not knowing where to store their helmet. He also wants to encourage people to cycle, despite his mother being killed when cycling. I’d also like to decide what risks I take.
