Although there is no denying there is a group of people who will never come to terms with the Sunday markets, most people recognise them to have been a success. Despite what Paul says, this isn't about them. If Sunday parking charges are introduced across Chiswick, the amount of revenue foregone by giving over the car park to the markets will be similar to that for which they are implementing savings measures which are likely to be very unpopular. It has to be asked, how secure is the future of the markets in this situation, particularly with the prospect of a significant reduction in the size of the Sainsbury's car park when development starts there. I've not heard about any lobbying by the markets on the Sunday parking issue, so maybe they are sanguine about it and have received assurances from the council that their existence is assured. If so, I'd be worried about complacency. |
