It has been government policy both under Conservatives and Labour to encourage the building of housing on supermarket car park sites. This means that planning authorities feel obliged to look favourably on these schemes. This enabled the Kew Retail Park scheme to get development and has brought forward the massive Waitrose scheme in West Ealing. Rising construction costs have meant these projects have to be denser and taller than ever and that means, that when it finally comes, the Sainsbury's development in Chiswick will probably be a bit of a shocker. While some parking might be retained, it will be a fraction of what is there which means that there will be even more of a premium on spaces in Chiswick. This is likely to present a challenge to lots of businesses in the area both markets and bricks and mortar. It will certainly increase the importance of the remaining bays in Chiswick including in the central car park. |
