Correct all the research shows that shopowners are utterly clueless about how customers arrive at their businesses.

But if research doesn’t satisfy the Chiswick conspiracy theorists then they can observe how some of the most vocal pro car shopkeepers park their private cars in the nearest available public space outside their premises during their trading hours, somehow evading fines from wardens and any negative attention from Councillors who are aware of the problem.
