Oxford Street is the busiest shopping street in Europe and yet it is impossible to park there. While other high streets may be dilapidated, these are mainly outside London and Chiswick High Road remains quite vibrant, although this isn't to say times aren't tough for local retailers. Most people who shop in Chiswick are local and walk there, so making parking more difficult probably won't have a devastating business overall. Some businesses will be more dependent on customers who drive for example Robert Dyas, whereas for some it may make little difference e.g. Waterstones. Those that close through a fall in business will probably be replaced by those whose customer profile is better suited to restricted parking. Whether this includes the markets or not is hard to say although if parking restrictions are being introduced because of people visiting them, then it would be hard to understand why their revenue wouldn't be affected. |
