Your very Darwinian view of these business is probably not totally inaccurate but forgets that we are talking about the ambitions and hopes of real people here many of whom are totally dependent on their shop for their income. Although you are right that there is no right for a business that is badly run or isn't selling people things they want to survive, at the moment it isn't just this type of operation that is struggling. Increased debts following Covid, rising interest rates, rising utility bills, rates and rent increases have made life tough for the best businesses on the High Road. Now with the NIC increase looming you might find that some of your favourite places don't survive the year. I don't know how these people can be helped other than through the 'use it or lose it' principle of buying goods and services from local businesses but we should be taking into account what they say when they tell us how a particular local policy might affect their trade. |
