Tony, you can mitigate the effect of rising population on traffic numbers but it is impossible to stop it happening. Even if the new residents never moved from their brand new apartments the services that would be required to maintain their presence are going to lead to more vehicle movements. Making developments car free will only reduce the level of increase but it can never eradicate extra traffic. Nobody is suggesting building a new road. The road is already there and there are hundreds of vehicles driving on it every day to get to the ample parking in the development. All that is being suggested is that all traffic, not just buses, can use it as a through road. With the possibility of a closure of the road at the Bollo Lane level crossing we may not even be talking about a net increase in roads. All the suggestions you make are good ones but they will only marginally mitigate the problems that are likely to arise in this area. The worst affected areas will be primarily residential and it would be a betrayal of the people who live in those areas if dogma was allowed to get in the way of practical solutions being considered. |
