More people = more traffic if you don't do something to stop it happening. There is no escaping population growth but building another road to cope is a tried and tested way to fail. Not having the parking is a good start but it needs to become more the norm. You are not screwing anyone over. People will choose to move to these developments. They are building entire communities in other parts of the world without parking. Transport hubs are the future and it has to start somewhere. A one stop shop within a couple of hundred metres of your home where you have a range of transport options. Bikes, Scooters, Carshare, train, tram, boat etc. It is pretty much widely accepted that a shared car can replace up to four cars and other cities around the world are embracing this. I was in Sydney recently and the Go Get cars have really taken off. Young people especially are not bothering to buy a car. Last mile delivery methods are already starting to evolve. We will soon see deliveries held at central portals before being distributed by various modes including drones, bikes and yes cars. The 20 minute neighbourhood concept is one that should be embraced. You have to prioritise walking and cycling whilst reducing car use or you are screwed however many roads you build. There is no escaping it. |
