Paul, we can only choose from what's on the table at an election. Reassessment of rates and introduction of new bands would have a broadly similar effect to a mansion tax. The greater revenue raised at the top end of the new stamp-duty regime means that there has already been an associated reduction in value and transactions in that market for reasons we all recognise. Introducing a mansion tax will reduce both further, but not be as much as if the stamp duty hadn't been already raised. |
