As I've said elsewhere, the value of the 'mansion tax' lies not in the amount of money it will raise but in the term itself, with its implications of privilege and condescension. The fact that it plays into the notion of a north-south divide ('bloody southerners, all sitting down there in their bloody mansions') is also politically useful. The mirror-image for the right wing would be the term 'benefit scroungers' rather than 'benefit claimants'. It's shabby and underhanded, but, hey, that's politics. |
