Yes, I think that as the years pass the pressure for road pricing and tolls will increase from the environmental lobby, the engineers and contractors who want to design, build and operate them and the politicians desperate to finance new roads schemes through private finance initiatives. Such schemes may well include major tunnels and major urban motorways that were dismissed when Cecil Parkinson was Secretary of State for Transport and Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister on grounds of cost, respect for the environment, security, safety and political common sense. In looking at these issues, local residents will look at the A4/Hammersmith Flyover as a local road we use fairly casually. However for the rest of London, the nation and indeed Europe and the world, it is an incredibly important route leading from the M4, Heathrow and the West of England directly into the West End and Europe's largest, most successful and most important city. A tolled M4/A4 could generate an incredible amount of money. Boris can afford to support such visionary schemes knowing that he will shortly be moving onto other possibly even greater things. As he was born in New York, he is eligible to become President of the USA. Now that would be an interesting challenge. |
