Re Michael Robinson and decreasing numbers of young drivers etc. You make good points, but I personally suspect that the reason why so many young people do not yet drive is primarily economic. With the cost of driving lessons, car insurance, student loans and accommodation all rising, then they are likely putting off buying their first car. But once they start earning decent wages and get onto the housing ladder (now mid-30's?), they'll likely take up driving again. In the meantime, as a 50-something car owner myself, I and only take the car out when traffic is lighter (evenings, weekends, school holidays basically). But if I find that traffic reduces during rush hour, weekdays and term time etc because there are fewer young drivers on the road, then I will take advantage - until there are too many other oldies like myself on the roads! |
