"For if the number of young drivers reduces, thereby leading to fewer cars on the road from that demographic, then the older generation who are currently deterred from driving by congestion will then take to their cars again. Which will eventually only take the traffic back to its former level. " However, in general, older people drive less than people in their 30s and 40s, so an increase in driving by people in their 60s and 70s compared to people in these age groups 10 years ago is quite a bit less than the decrease in driving of the younger age groups, so there has been an overall decline. People of 60+ in London have free public transport so that tends to suppress driving by this age group as well. This will continue as the cohorts of people in their 20s and 30s get older and continue to drive less than the same age group 10 years ago unless there is some reason why driving levels shoot up to previous levels. There doesn't appear to be a simple explanation for this trend although one theory is that smart phones are replacing cars for how people manage their lives! |
