It is interesting that younger people are less likely to drive/own cars than their predecessors. But I don't think we should take that as an indication that traffic levels must inevitably decrease in future. For if the number of young drivers reduces, thereby leading to fewer cars on the road from that demographic, then the older generation who are currently deterred from driving by congestion will then take to their cars again. Which will eventually only take the traffic back to its former level. The idea that More Roads = More Cars is only good as far as it goes, since once congestion reaches a certain level, people either stop travelling, or find alternative means. As far as the Hammersmith Flyunder goes, assuming the technical problems can be overcome, I am cautiously in favour, not because transferring the traffic to below street level will make any difference to congestion, but because it can free up space above street level to build homes, shops and businesses etc. And insofar as it may re-unite Hammersmith with the removal of the flyover, then that should be a bonus. Beyond that, can't see it making any difference to the Gyratory, good or bad. P.S. When does a "Roundabout" become a "Gyratory"? |
