"in fifteen years time there will be much less traffic, but IMHO that is unlikely." IMO that depends on the policies of the boroughs and the mayor. Growth in traffic isn't inevitable as demonstrated over the last 15 years when traffic in central London has fallen as a result of policies like congestion charging and allocation of road space to bus lanes, and this has been with the population increasing. TfL could extend their demand management such as emission zones and congestion charging zones. TfL are already encouraging road freight operators to move delivery traffic outside peak commuting times, and there is a lot more they could do with that. There is also an interesting demographic trend in that people in their 20s, 30s and 40s now, drive less and have a smaller proportion of driving licenses compared to the same age groups 10 years ago. Now maybe they will all start driving a lot more in the next 10 years but it doesn't appear to be happening so far. |
