Can we please stop calling each other idiots and have a grown-up discussion about this? The issue with the bus lanes, in my view, is not about jams in the middle of the night, but the degree of conformance during the day and evening. If you tinker with the times of operation to make them start slightly earlier or finish slightly later, either you'll confuse people or they won't notice the subtle change. Changing to 24-hour operation is more likely to get noticed and hence obeyed, and it clears the bus lanes for the extra hours in which they are needed. If traffic is light at other times, why does it matter? There are no magic solutions. There are no empty roads that "traffic wardens" could suddenly find and direct drivers to, as someone suggested. This seems to me a sensible emergency measure that will help at least to reduce bus delays, which is a way of benefiting the most people. |
