"The French quite sensibly sited CDG North of Paris so they are free to add as many [runways] as they need. However our Labour Government is not so intelligent." But would a Conservative Government be any more intelligent? Doing a search for keyword "Heathrow" on the Conservative Party website (www.conservatives.com) for "Heathrow" produces just three references of which two address the issue of expanding Heathrow. One is a statement from Theresa Villiers (Shadow Transport Secretary) last November in which she appears to support Government policy subject to environmental safeguards. ("I hope Ruth Kelly can reassure the public that she will work with us to ensure that any plans for the future of Heathrow are consistent with these key environmental goals.") The other is a policy submission to Shadow Cabinet which contains this clear statement: "We recommend that an incoming Conservative government’s priority should be the strengthening of London’s, and Britain’s, main air transport hub at Heathrow" From "Freeing Britain to Compete: Equipping the UK for Globalisation", Submission to the Shadow Cabinet by the Economic Competitiveness Policy Group, Chairmen, Rt Hon John Redwood MP and Simon Wolfson. August 2007. We of course have our own airport north of our capital city - Stansted. But the Conservative Government limited its capacity in 1984, and neither Labour nor Conservatives seem to be willing to push through its expansion instead of expanding Heathrow. At national level, there is really little difference in party policies. |
