"the comments in the Wandsworth submission where they claimed that the A380 noise levels they measured on the initial flight into Heathrow did not agree with the proposed quota classification." Having tracked down Wandsworth's submission on Heathrow expansion, I see that their comment was based on their own measurement of take-off noise (which doesn't affect Wandsworth): "the Council’s own noise measurements on the prototype A380 indicated it did not offer any noise reduction (registering at QC/2 on take off) whereas it was certified as QC/1." This comment is misguided. In fact the A380 is certified as QC/2 on departure and QC/0.5 on arrival. This compares with a BA 747-400 at QC/4 on departure and QC/2 on arrival. The A380 was never expected or designed to achieve QC/1 on departure. QC/0.5 on arrival is quieter than all Boeing 747, 767 and 737 types in British Airways' fleet, and quieter or the sane as their 777s. Obviously this hasn't been validated in passenger service here, but the certification tests are a lot more rigorous than Wandsworth's one-off measurement. As you say, we'll see (or rather hear) soon. Singapore Airlines start flying the A380 into Heathrow on March 18, due to arrive at 15:05. However, after the inaugural flight, daily A380 arrivals will be at 05:25 (05:55 from 30 March). |
