Tom You say that the noise calculations should average the noise out. Why? If I am waken early morning or have a conversation interrupted I experience real annoyance, I dont care if from 11pm I have a bit of quiet or there are a few days of the year where planes are not overhead. My understanding is that these noise measurements were developed to look at risk of hearing damage from machinery, where average noise over a period of time is a concern. They are a very poor way of measuring whether people are disturbed by regular episodes of significant noise. THe govnt recently ppublished a study, which they then rubbished and now ignored, which suggested that noise annoyance kicks in at 50dB, which is where the WHO also suggests people get annoyed by noise. So I dontget the comment that anyone who is annoyed by 50dB shouldnt be living in London. It is only along main roads or flight paths that people experience those kind of noise levels. |
