That St Maartens video looks like the basis of a rather macabre flight simulator game! There is one rather important reason why BAA will try as hard as they can to keep noisy aircraft off the third runway, irrespective of what they might be able to get landed there. This is due to the logarithmic nature of perceived sound, and is a variant of the Concorde effect - a few noisy aircraft can have a disproportionate effect on the noise contour. A noisy aircraft landing on one of the existing runways will halve its noise contribution compared to landing on a 4dB quieter third runway. In terms of getting the most traffic for a given 57dB contour area, it will be most noise efficient for BAA to keep the third runway as quiet as possible. |
