Tom, more thoughts on these wretched, bogus figures. If I read the DfT noise maps correctly then for the Heathrow 2002 16hr average summer day noise contours (fig 3.1) the level in Grove Park is 59dBA Leq. The point I've chosen is on Stavely Gardens, half way between the A316 and the burnt sports club, because this is the same distance from the North runway threshold as I am from the putative 3rd. This is the figure for a 16hr day, but with runway alternation there would only be planes overhead for about half that time. I think it follows that the average noise level for the half day with planes are overhead would be 62dBA Leq, which would also be the level experienced here, all day, if a 3rd runway is built. While it is true that no jumbos would be included on the 3rd, how much noisier are they than medium jets? The planes that really seem to make a racket are the older ones, like the twin rear jets (Caravelles? 1-11s?) which still seem to be up there, and would probably be destined for the 3rd runway. Unless I'm mistaken it seems that figures which purport a 54dBA Leq level in Chiswick when it's really about 62dBA Leq given continuous operation really are quite wretched, bogus, and misleading. 54dB to 62dB, thats about seven times the noise level the consultation is suggesting, I think. Please do tell me I'm wrong Tom. That scale of deception is scary. |
