But St Maarten and Luton only have the one runway, and heavy planes there will do what it takes in terms of loaded weight, full-power take-off, and shallow approach to make it on and off the shorter runway: Given the existing longer runways are available at Heathrow, I really don't think using the third runway would be standard operations for the heavy aircraft. It's certainly not used in the operations example I referred to above. You can see the "heavy" aircraft arriving on the south runway and then crossing the north runway to the new terminal 6. There are more than enough A320-class movements expected in 2020 to completely fill the third runway. I would be amazed if we see 747's regularly flying in over the High Road. |
