Sorry if I was obscure. It's just that your description of a plane passing overhead and drowning out the TV/conversation is NOT what we experience in Grove Park. Indoors I generally don't even notice the aircraft overhead at all, and we aren't double glazed. On our allotment right under the flight path it is very rare for an aircraft to drown out conversation. I never hear more than a low rumble from aircraft on the southern runway approaches and I'm confident that we won't get noise from R3. I think that if people came and listened then they would get an idea of what to expect rather than making it up/extrapolating from one or two extraordinary events. If you are aware of aircraft noise levels over Chiswick then I am surprised at your posts, maybe your experience was not recent thoough, the BAC 1-11 disappeared from our skies in the early 1990s and I think the Caravelle was long gone even then, I agree that the MD11s operated by Alitalia and SAS are some of the noisiest airliners still operating at LHR but these aircraft must go. Airlines update their fleets to save money mostly in fuel costs - note that the most modern fleets belong to the low fare airlines. Jets CAN be VERY quiet, the AVRO RJ is barely audible but unfortunately they have four engines and the extra maintainance makes them uneconomical - personally I think the authorities should penalise noisier aircraft to level the playing field. |
