| The squeeze on hospitality has been relentless. The Covid discount on Business rates phasing out. Increased Employers NI, minimum wage increases and, a big one, the shock of steep energy rises. Compounding that, the rise of Deliveroo etc. and accelerating trend towards "home entertainment". It all seems dystopian, less of people mingling and socialising with people outside their immediate friends / family, more staying at home, in a shrinking personal world. Went to a pub in Hayes recently. It was like stepping back in time. People said hello when we walked in, altghough they didn't know us, people at the next table chatted to us. Mostly older people and a few the worse for wear. One guy got up had a dance and fell over, but wasn't an issue, bar lady picked him up. Maybe I could start a business running tours to it; step back in time, experience the traditional British boozer. last chance to see, a dissappearing world. |
