| Crime, poor education, ballooning welfare, crumbling public services and increasing unemployment are of course a serious problem. But to say that all these have been caused by the present government is either unbelievably stupid or breathtakingly dishonest. Only the recent increase in unemployment can be laid at the government's door, although unemployment was already rising in the last two years of the Conservative administration. The rest are the inevitable consequence of all those years of the previous government's austerity programme under the pretext of debt reduction. Economic growth was so restricted by austerity that national debt rose considerably as a proportion of GDP. This short-sighted policy, in deference to complaints from the right-wing media and people like you about the evils of supposedly unfair taxation, created most of the problems with which the current government is now saddled, and about which, sadly, it has done very little. Change! What change? Andy Burnham, anyone? |
