| The big change, since the post war political consensus, is the move away from policies to redistribute wealth and an assumption that wealth, including corporate wealth, should be shared. It has led to many unfortunate outcomes. Student debt is now 292 billion and rising. Companies used to pay for their employees training up to degree level, I was a beneficiary of that. The move to student loans put the cost on the individual. That has been the direction of travel. the promise being that somehow it would create a stronger economy and make everyone wealthier as individuals. It hasn't. When would anyone choose to be young, the era of free higher education, cheap college courses, cheap property, lower travel and utility costs, great employee perks; final salary pensions, day release to study, subsidised mortgages and loans, cheap to access sports clubs, or now? |
