| All the parties help businesses. Labour has been a big supporter of the gambling industry. Takes a lot of money from it, actually both big parties do. Michael Dugher former Labour MP, headed up the gaming industry's lobbying body until recently, after stepping down as an MP. He also worked as a lobbyist for a big IT firm before entering parliament, it secured government contracts. Senior MPs in all parties have close links to business and skip across from politics to industry or industry to politics. If you attend any of the party conferences, a large hall will be set up with stalls from big industries and companies who run government contracts. They fund a lot of the hospitality and give gifts to MPs. Locally, Councillors attend MIPIM in Cannes and are wined and dined and lobbied by developers and the construction industry. When I worked in banking, there were strict rules about what you could accept from customers. Business lunches were okay, within reason, frequency and cost wise. Odd corporate hospitality at a sports event, but usually as a team. The concern was that it would cloud your judgement if you had accepted large, personal, gifts and favours from people. There are no such rules in Parliament as long as you register what you took inn a book and some MPs seem to forget to do that. |
