| Andrew thank you for your lengthy and considered response. Just one point your reference points are for older people who have worked for decades and chosen to invest in their future home, etc. Very few people in their youth have wealth being are it takes most people decades to build it up having paid their fair share of taxes along the way. When I started my career life I had nothing either so it happens to all generations. Totally agree living in London it is hard to get on the property ladder but given the luxury of WFH many are now choosing to move out of London hence flat sales are struggling to sell. It isn’t just income tax don’t forget NI also the true top rate of tax is actually 60% plus 2% NI over 50K, it’s not 45%. It’s a lot of money and I don’t begrudge higher earners I think they pay more than their fair share as a % of income. Also remember not everyone is fortunate to have a decent pension so they build wealth to support them in the later years that’s fair. Your point is also well made some older people may have asset wealth but not cash in the bank so let’s not hit them even harder. |
