| The RAN would be stuck with diesel electric submarines, totally unfit for their purpose. In general diesel submarines are constricted by being able to stay submerged for only 48 hours. Although an Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system would allow submarines to operate for up to two weeks without having to surface to recharge their batteries. Nuclear subs are constricted by food and other stores availability. Generally three months is the limit. There is no need for refuelling inside 20 years. The USN no longer operates diesel subs. The Aussies are well shot of the French deal, but could have handled its cancellation better, and probably would have done if Macron wasn't such an arrogant s.o.b. |
