Because Brexit was an attempt by David Cameron to defuse a longstanding *Tory* party issue. Instead, it blew up in his face, at least in part due to his own party’s policy of austerity. Teresa May then decided that this should be a Tory party matter alone (and quite possibly her matter alone, until Gina Miller made her get Parliamentary approval to invoke Article 50), by refusing to talk to other parties, and setting out a stall for a hard Brexit (no deal is better than a bad deal) and calling remainers ‘citizens of nowhere’, thus dispelling any idea of compromise. |
