| Janice, some things are cheaper in the US. The main reason is that the US is a large integrated economy working with a single currency and (mainly) under common rules, with few geographical barriers (except for its size), free movement of capital, goods and services and people within its borders, and (even although each state is a seperate legal jurisdiction with many of its own laws) recognition and enforceability of legal judgements across the US. In fact many of the same reasons why membership of the EU makes the UK richer than it would otherwise be. I.e. the success of the US economy (at least historically) because of the size of its integrated market is one of the very reasons why we should stay in the EU. However, don't get ill if you live in the US. They don't have the same social protections we are guaranteed under European law. Many people go bankrupt or worse die because of lack of access to health care in the US (unless you are rich or well insured). In fact the very economic and social model that lies at the heart of Brexit. Which makes the lie on the side of the bus all the more disgusting. |
