| 'A marginal majority by a minority of the electorate cannot, by any stretch of the imagination be called "a decisive expression".' Indeed, and a sensible precaution (if one believes a referendum is an appropriate way of determining a complex constitutional issue - I don't) would have been to require a qualified majority, to avoid exactly this sort of situation. But the government set its face against such a measure, as being unnecessary, since the referendum was only advisory. Theresa May's incessant claiming that she's duty bound to deliver "the will of the people" is a subversion of parliamentary sovereignty |
