This “Budapest Idea” with hints of 3 night city-breaks rather entirely misses the point ... Most nations that got sucked behind the iron curtain during the 20th C soon found their cities (and many of their small towns) littered with communist statues. Mainly Lenin and Stalin but sometimes others. Of course they were ripped down after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Have you guys no idea what life behind the iron curtain was like! It not as if it was their own history they were ripping down! What IS interesting is when we compare English cities to Russian cities – where statues go up and down with monotonous regularity as dead despots fall in and out of political favour with living despots. Where whole cities and streets get re-named time and again.. Until when? Until someone gets it “right”? A ridiculous concept. Treating history so flippantly, as a past that can always be manoeuvred .. Be careful what you pray for.... PS:- never knew about Gropecunt Lane. Now that's real juicy history.. |
