| ‘how slaves got their names’ ... The Jamaican telephone directory has a great many Bantons. This has always bothered me. I arrived at JFK airport from the U.K. a few years ago. Approaching passport check, I spotted the black lady’s name on her lapel - her surname was Banton. Her mouth dropped open when she looked in my passport. She told me that I was the first white Banton she’d met. |
