The wide-ranging DfE document isn't all that helpful about what teachers should actually teach their Key Stage 3 pupils. In theory it's up to them but they're likely to follow well established schemes of work. Here's a typical one: https://www.pearsonschoolsandfecolleges.co.uk/secondary/History/11-16/ExploringHistory/Samples/ks3-sow-guidance-doc-edexcel.pdf ..which takes students from the Norman Conquest to post-WW2. It's expected that they'll do earlier times at primary school, looking at 'Ancient Civilisations' as well as dotting through the Victorians and WW2. So in answer to the original question about whether state schools teach history, they're certainly expected to, and lots of it, but with priorities in so many schools focussed on other subjects, history isn't alone in becoming neglected. |
