Do you differentiate between people who were revered for actions unconnected with slavery, but happened to own slaves, and those whose wealth (and subsequent ability to fund good works) was largely derived from the slave trade? Americans revere George Washington for leading their successful rebellion against British colonial rule, and we revere Horatio Nelson for winning the battle of Trafalgar, but both were slave owners. |
