PE > "When I was working in a school on a 'local study', an 'Afro-Caribbean' boy asked why he had an English name but his Indian friend had an Indian name, which led us to look at how Caribbean slaves were given the names of their owners." A similar thing happened to a teacher friend of mine. The topic was name origins and my friend was explaining that names can be based on a trade, for example 'baker' or 'smith'; or on a physical characteristic, for example 'longfellow' or 'short'. At which point, a boy put up his hand and asked, "Sir, I'm black but my surname is 'white', how is that?". This caused some amusement, but also led to a discussion about how slaves got their names. |
