There were many Gropecunt Lanes in Medieval England, usually dark alleyways where one might spend a few minutes with a prostitute. Most of these Lanes were renamed over the years but whether this was because of the name or the association with ladies of the night we shall never know. Point is that attitudes DO change and whilst we should be made aware of the history of streets / buildings / statues it is not always advisable to have them staring you in the face. I like the Budapest idea of a park just outside the city containing all the statues and obelisks and road names that are no longer appropriate. Keep them visible and accessible but not 'In your face' and keep history alive. |
