History as a subject fascinates me but bored me rigid at school. All we got was dates and Kings so essentially it was learning stuff parrot fashion from a bloke in a cloak and mortar board. My boys have taken a keen interest in history because their teacher completely immerses them in whatever topic they are learning at the time. He has mannequins in the classroom that he dresses up in the garb of the day and they get to watch movies and go on field trips. Brilliant! However ... I am completely against removing the bits of history that we don't agree with and especially those bits that were 'of their time' and were circumstantial and relevant to the time. Those circumstances may not exist now but in my view it is absolutely essential to learn the good stuff AND the bad. In order to move forward we must learn from past mistakes, after all we are where we are now because of our past and to pretend the bad bits didn't happen is ridiculous. |
