The word “celebrated” shouldn't apply to a sophisticated nation like ours. We know the difference between then and now. Or we bloody should know. We realise that times change and those honoured and celebrated in one era might be looked upon differently in the next. Or we bloody should realise. Or maybe there are those who want us to be more like communist Russia:- tear down statues every fifty years or so and plant new ones. Re-name streets and cities time and again. Until when? When they eventually get it “right”. Impossible. Not even desirable. Ridiculous. All art should be saved. All art displayed should continue being displayed because that's a big part of our history. And all history should be taught. Good and not so good. Those noisy few artistic philistines who are offended by some statues shouldn't be listened to.. Alex Ferguson would have told them where to go... |
