The determination of people like Mr Taylor and Mr Campbell to make this discussion into a cyclists vs drivers boxing match is profoundly unhelpful. Nobody has been seriously hurt by a pedal bike or a car crossing the road in Chiswick in recent years as far as I am aware. The overwhelming proportion of both types of road users are courteous and considerate of pedestrians. The problem is more one of perception and a feeling that people have of being less safe. Crossing the road is a more confusing and complex exercise than it used to be in the centre of Chiswick. As the same time there has been an explosion of electric powered two wheeled vehicles that move quickly and silently and are generally driven by people in a hurry. It would be nice if some people could see this issue from other people's perspective for a change and be open minded about what could be done to make things more amenable in the centre of Chiswick for all. |
