So we’re back to the ‘I ride on the pavement, etc., because it’s safer!’ argument. While early cycling campaigners fought hard to have bicycles legally regarded as ‘vehicles’, with all the rights to use the roads that entailed, it seems that present day cycle campaigners are increasingly pressing for the opposite - that the roads are far too dangerous so they should be allowed to cycle anywhere else but. There’s some logic in this, as a bicycle is an incredibly flexible vehicle, able to travel at speed on the open road, yet able to negotiate narrow tracks and rough terrain, and even to be carried! While the damage a cyclist might do to a pedestrian is small compared with what a motor vehicle might do, the irritation to pedestrians of having cyclists illegally on the pavement riding amongst them is considerable! |
