Pedestrians can get pretty impatient as well, particularly over the time ‘wasted’ before their lights eventually go green. As we all begin to get used to the lights’ rotation we can now anticipate things and gain another 5 seconds or so, giving us 25% more crossing time. I think all road users get frustrated and puzzled by the amount of ‘dead’ time between light changes, wondering what’s happening - or isn’t happening. It’s also self-defeating, for what’s the point of having a numbered countdown for pedestrians when we all know it’s lying and there are several extra seconds we can make use of. |
