I do appreciate that brambles and overhanging branches and hedges make our pavements narrower and these are very often householder responsibilities which are now more than ever needing to be addressed. I also appreciate how good it is to work with fellow residents and clear up your area. I've done it. You may also be able to swap tips on how to deal with various problematic/challenging plants and hedges etc. Also important are the wheelie bins which are left out on the pavement causing a hazard for many people walking or wheeling buggies or wheelchairs along it let alone those who have poor eyesight. Some seem to be left out continuously. Also remember that a lot of the damage caused to the pavements which allows plants to grow there is caused by cars and vans mounting the pavement. Walking along a pavement the other day we watched a car in front of us park in this lazy way of driving forward in over the kerb and then back down onto the road when the rest of the road in front was free. That damages the pavements the upkeep of which we all pay Council Tax for. Building work also very often damages pavements and should be remedied by the builders or utilities contractors concerned and their clients but often isn't. Damaged pavements are a trip hazard and should be reported to the Councils/Council Contractors (eg Hounslow Highways) involved. Please concentrate on doing that so that fewer people end up in hospital and making use of the NHS rather than sending loads of pictures dobbing in hapless wild flowers on fixmystreet etc. It may be you or yours who does and many don't recover. This may also cause a lot of stress on your day to day arrangements eg lack of childcare and hospital visits etc. Yes it is about taking some responsibility ourselves and not just about ranting about supposed rights! |
