| I'm clearly a newbie (a mere 19 years in W4) as I've not heard of most of these places, and don't get the Le Tortoise joke. Anyway, my thoughts, for what little they are worth: La Mancha - surprised that only Matthew Swain has mentioned it. The food and wine was terrific, the service superb -friendly without being oleaginous, and meals would inevitably end with a complimentary liqueur (which I have only subsequently found in Gerry's on Old Compton Street). Quantus - really good, fresh food, comfortable atmosphere, superb service again - perhaps suffered from being too far up Devonshire Road, or maybe because it was too close to La Trompette (not that this has done Vinoteca any harm)? Fish Hook on TGT - not mentioned yet, I think. When it opened it was great but as the "brand" over-expanded it went rapidly downhill. Sam's - I can't say I miss it. The vibe was so cliquey, service occasionally snooty despite what it was, although the brunches were decent (if anyone could recommend a good W4 brunch spot I will be forever in your debt). The Hawksmoor spinoff which replaced Sam's was a bit of a nothing. I wonder if an actual Hawksmoor would have done better? |
