| From all the restaurants mentioned my standout three are Southey's, the Chiswick Grill, and the Bedlington: providing all three retain the same kitchen(obviously) and the waitering staff. The food at Southey's, whatever the type of cuisine was outstanding. The chef's wife Sally used to patrol her area giving sound advice to customers "If you wanted a vegetarian meal why did you come here?" The more formal Chiswick Grill had a big, immaculately dressed waiter who slowly walked his way along the aisle, seemingly ensuring table manners were observed at all times. I found him a little intimidating and used to hope it was his night off on my occasional visits. The food however, was always superb. The Bedlington café was the antithesis of the Chiswick Grill. Cheap, often overcrowded and chaotic, but charming and fun. It was fronted by Thai born Tek, who was profoundly deaf and whose English was very poor. He used to take the orders at the table and sometimes over the phone when he heard it ringing. If you doubt wheather all this could be fun all I can say is you just had to be there. |
