| Does anyone remember Tarts on the corner of Mayfield Ave. and CHR? I think it opened in 1981 or 1982. It was in a basement and the decor was pretty wild! I knew the owner, in fact I worked briefly in the other Tarts in Notting Hill. He was a restaurateur (once owned Crusts in Ealing and Richmond) and small time antique dealer. For the furnishings, he emptied 2 garages and his home full of antiques and vintage stuff like draperies, mirrors, lighting, paintings, furniture, objets d'art etc. He wanted the menu to be a bit like Joe Allen serving burgers and cocktails. The burgers came with different toppings - my favourite was mayo, horseradish and rosemary - and chips and salads. The cocktails, served in huge glasses with umbrellas, fruit, plastic sticks and straws etc. had very suggestive names such as 'Sex on the Beach, Slow Comfortable Screw and The French Lieutenants Letter. Wish I could remember the rest. Those were the days! |
