| " That's those who are lucky enough to get into halls. " Its not about 'luck' to get into Halls. Its about academic achievement. Those who get placements due to high achievement get places in Halls. Those who scrape in or are placed into 'clearing' because they put the particular Uni as 2nd choice obviously have a tougher time and if they are fortunate to get a place due to their below average results, they should consider themselves lucky and a small price to pay to find own accommodation. This is known as 'real life' in a competitive world. " Research by Santander found that almost half of students work to fund their studies. " So what - so did I. What's the problem? You have to work to accomplish and succeed. " So your idea that students are all living like yuppies is rubbish. " I never said that at all. I implied that your figure of £60K is rubbish because if they need £60k over 3 years they ASPIRE to live like yuppies " Maybe your kid’s mates live like that, but not the hard working students I know. " My young adult daughter's friends don't live like that. They are responsible young people who take on the responsibility and are encouraged by their parents to lead responsible lives if they want a good education - and they don't complain!! They work hard and achieve results. " And what about books, fares, and if you are studying subjects such as art then you face far higher bills. " What about them? The Govt loan covers that. But you may need to cut down on lager, cider and vodka a little when times are tough. " And even when I was at college in the 1980's with no fee's and a small grant, most students spent their holidays working to reduce their debts. " So what? So did I. " All the students I know are desperate in the holidays to earn some cash. " All the students I know are of the same ilk " God knows the types you hang out with if they are all off skiing and travelling in the holidays.. " Nothing to do with God - you made that up. But yes some did have nice holidays part-funded by their parents. My daughter had three holidays abroad. So what - she got a first so she earned a holiday. Its called just reward. One she paid for herself by working, one I paid for and one my wife paid for. " And you know what, I got crap grades at school, and crap grades in college and I scrapped into a poly, (now a university), one that you would probably like to have closed down. I am one of those students, that according to you probably weren't bright enough to do a degree. But I left with a first, the only one that was awarded in my year group. " Well done - there will always be exceptions to the rule but as you have stated you were the only one awarded a first in your year group, you sway me more to the idea that the promoted Poly's may be part of the problem and possibly should have Uni status removed. I'll sit on the fence for a while on this one though. " And I have since gone on to represent the UK in symposiums in Hungry and Argentina, and win various awards. " Again - well done. But actually I have now decided I won't sit on the fence. Having seen your misuse of grammar, bad spelling, sentence structure and sequencing I am just grateful that you haven't represented the UK in any English speaking countries. " But then, it would seem you are quite happy to have our arts and humanities slashed and burnt to be replaced by Morrison’s degree’s.. " Nope - not at all. |
