| In answer to Steve's question about Andrew Dakers fate as a Council candidate. The turn out for local elections is much higher when it is held on the same day as a General Election (I guess you all know this!!!). Many of the voters who would otherwise not have voted at a Local Election probably only had a hazy idea about who their council candidates are and what their track records are so they tended to vote along party lines. Brentford & Isleworth Constituency became a two horse "ditch the bitch campaign" with a heavy rearguard action by Labour with activists being bused in to help get the vote out. Their herculean efforts must be admired even if you cannot praise them. The Liberals could not match this since they were putting all their efforts into trying to hold on to Richmond Council. In my opinion (and you are of course free to disagree with my analysis) the Lib-Dems drew false comfort from the 2,000 voters who switched from from Labour to Liberal in the previous General Election. This was in all probability an anti-war and anti-Blair vote and in 2010 they all appear to have reverted to type and voted Labour once again. With Andrew gone some of us still try to keep the Green Flag flying but it is less fun without Andrew around to tease. |
